Links to resources on cemetery history and preservation

http://www.potifos.com/cemeteries.html

An extremely useful site that has lists of sites related to Cemetery Preservation; Cemetery Lists and Directories of Descendents; Education Programs; Online Discussion Groups; Collections of Cemetery Links; Organisations and Publications; History, Culture, Sociology, and Images; and Specific Cemeteries and Sites. The links on Cemetery Preservation are informative and well worth a visit. However it has to be remembered that the majority of these sites are talking about cemeteries in America and that their conditions sometimes widely differ to those in Australia (in terms of materials, climate, legislation, and approaches). Hence some suggestions may be inappropriate in Australia eg. Tombstone rubbings.

The Connecticut Gravestone Network

This site has some excellent advice on cemetery conservation under "Cemetery Dos and Don’ts".

Association for Gravestone Studies

http://www.gravestonestudies.org

An American association founded in 1977 for the purpose of furthering the study and preservation of gravestones. They have an annual conference in America and a range of publications that you can order through their bookshop.

New Orleans Cemeteries

A fascinating collection of images of the above-ground tombs in New Orleans. Some of them date from c.1910 and give a rare insight into how cemeteries in this district looked around the turn of the century.

Broad Links sites on cemeteries and death

City of the Silent

http://www.alsirat.com/silence/index.html

A great place to start for all things related to cemeteries. The index includes a (partially tongue-in-cheek) glossary of symbolism, frequently asked questions, death in literature and art and plenty of useful links. Although with a strong American slant, the City of the Silent is interested in promoting the cultural history of cemeteries as well as their artistic significance. In this respect, it is well informed.
