The Trust is supporting a proposal for the re-use of the former Killara Post Office as an Academy of Music. The building is presently zoned for use only as a post office and the Trust is urging the Minister for Planning to approve a spot rezoning for this new proposed use and to complete the proposal to enter the building as a heritage item on Ku-ring-gai Council’s Local Environmental Plan. Currently the redundant post office site is a potential development site for increased residential density. Although increased densities is a Sydney-wide policy the maintenance of cultural and community activities and appropriate re-use of such buildings also must be part of the planning process.
The Trust has objected to a proposal to demolish the small pavilion known as the Wireless House in Foley Park on Glebe Point Road at Glebe. The pavilion was built at the time the park was established in the late 1930s. A “wireless” set was donated at the time by Grace Bros to be operated in the “Wireless House” so that local people who could not afford to buy such equipment could come and sit beside the Wireless House” to hear the radio programs of the period. It was very popular and no other example of such a facility is known to the Trust. As part of the park “upgrading” it is proposed to demolish the building, which is not unattractive, and to replace it with an interpretative plinth.
Keep the wheels rolling - SAVE THE 3801
The Trust-supported nomination of Eveleigh’s Large Erecting Shop and its historic locomotives such as the 3801 to the National Heritage List has been accepted, and the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage has put the nomination on exhibition for public comment. Despite this, at 7.15pm on 26 November the locomotive was moved under high security from Eveleigh to Maitland. Essential maintenance was not carried out, which could have led to damage to the 3801’s working parts. Even worse, the inspection pit at Maitland collapsed, unable to hold the locomotive’s weight. 3801 Ltd skilled workers had to be called in to rectify the maintenance problem. The Trust has now launched a ‘Bring Back the 3801 to Eveleigh Campaign’.
The National Trust supports the continued operation of both 3801 and 3830 from Eveleigh and the retention of the large erecting shed as the key NSW workshop for maintence and repair of steam locomotives and rolling stock.
