The Great North Road was constructed between 1826 and 1836 from Sydney
to Newcastle and Upper Hunter. It remains one of the major engineering
feats of the convict era. A plaque will be unveiled providing interpretation
at Monkey Place Creek. On the day, take time to travel along two branches
of this great road. Another significant site will also be commemorated
at Sawyers Gully, Old Maitland, Cessnock (*Please see under Cessnock City
Council) with a plaque unveiling at 10am.

Newcastle City Council will open the doors of the "AA Company House" for
the first time since it began conservation work two years ago. Construction
began on the State heritage listed house in 1848 as the residence of the
Mine Manager of the D Pit. As one of the oldest colliery structures in
Australia, it is being progressively conserved by Newcastle City Council
as a Museum and Educational venue. Come and see works completed and in
progress, including the stabilisation of interior walls and floors, and
marvel at the artefacts found during recent flooring conservation. Guided
tours will run throughout the day.

Last Word (A Comedy Puppet Performance)

This play portrays a group of characters gathered together for the funeral
of a relative. Dominant in the minds of most is the Will that will be
read afterwards. The different attitudes of the young and old formed by
their social positions are examined - but surprising similarities emerge,
which indicate that with patience all divides can be bridged.

vehicles, dating from the early 1900's to the 1970's were instrumental
