Wednesday 18 April was World Heritage Day, a day to reflect on the things we value and want to preserve for future generations, and an opportune moment for the Trust to draw public attention to heritage at risk. As you will read below, the Trust highlighted some important yet vulnerable natural heritage – a remnant forest in Sydney – and two items of vital industrial heritage under imminent threat. You can read more in the SMH article on our nominations, just click here. In our regular feature, Sustainability Spotlight, below, we introduce our new Sustainability Program which will be launched in May, and which renews our long commitment to conserving the environment (click here for more on the "green Trust"). We are appealing for funds for this important initiative, and would appreciate your support. Donations can be made online by clicking here. Finally, our time capsule project continues with some wonderful Messages to the Future from Trust Living Treasures such as Russell Crowe and others eminent in their fields. Read them on the web – just click here. You can also find out more about the project, buy your own Message to the Future Cards and join a collective book of hopes and dreams.

 Conservation Issues

Heritage@Risk - World Heritage Day 18 April
To mark World Heritage Day, 18 April, the Trust has nominated rare forest, a crane and the Eveleigh railway workshops as the State’s most endangered items for consideration by a national panel to determine the Top 10 items of Heritage@Risk. The Blue Gum High Forest and associated urban conservation areas in Ku-ring-gai are increasingly under threat from rampant urban development. The landmark hammerhead crane at Garden Island, one of only 15 such cranes in the world, is under threat of demolition, while the same cranes in Glasgow have been given the highest grade of protection. The Smithsonian Institution has called for the preservation of Eveleigh Railyards, one of Australia’s finest industrial heritage sites. Click here to read our media release.

Loss of the Valhalla Theatre, Glebe
The re-development of the historic Valhalla Theatre in Glebe into offices has been approved despite strong opposition by the National Trust, and despite increasing population and a multi-million dollar funding injection by Council in ‘rejuvenating’ Glebe Point Road. The revitalisation of the Avoca Street and St Pauls Street Randwick Precinct, Norton Street, Leichhardt and Oxford Street, Paddington/Darlinghurst has been dependent to a large degree on the operation of cinemas and theatres. The Trust believes the loss of the Valhalla will be strongly regretted in coming years.

Wireless House
The Sydney City Council has resolved to retain the Wireless House in Foley Park, Glebe with repairs as necessary and a heritage interpretation/public art strategy to be applied to the building. The Council is to be commended in conserving the rare Wireless House and not proceeding with the original plan for its demolition and replacement with an interpretive plinth.

Industrial Development in South Goulburn
The Trust is concerned at proposals to develop a massive industrial area comprising an interchange and storage sheds at Gundary south of Goulburn. The land is of high scenic and historic significance and contains numerous homesteads and properties dating from the 1840s to the twentieth century. There is a more appropriate site at North Goulburn adjoining a freight rail connection. Development would massively increase triple-trailer trucks using the streets of Goulburn and threaten historic Lansdowne Bridge Classified by the Trust in 1986.
