Surely one of the most spectacular garden settings in NSW, Everglades Gardens was first opened to the public in October 1936 by owner Henri Van de Velde. This became a traditional event in the Mountains, to benefit of local charity groups, maturing into an annual festival celebrating the return of Spring. The National Trust acquired Everglades in 1962. An eclectic twentieth century garden, it is a remarkable combination of the creative aspirations of its wealthy businessman owner, Henri Van de Velde (1879-1947) and the expertise of Danish born landscape gardener Paul Sorensen (1890-1983). When Henri Van de Velde purchased the property in 1932, Sorensen was engaged to lay out the garden on the difficult, steeply sloping site. Bushfire had substantially destroyed an established house, orchard and ornamental plantings at Everglades in 1910 but remnants were utilised in the new design. The best of the existing planted and native trees on the site were retained and the garden was designed as a series of semi-formal terraces, each with a separate theme, down the slope. Spread
over three undulating hectares, Everglades remains the perfect venue for
garden and heritage enthusiasts to explore the many hidden pleasures within
this National Trust listed property. |
