Local Conservation Architect Graham Edds and his partner Carol Edds will deliver a slide lecture outlining the philosophy behind the repairs and conservation works that were undertaken on Windsor Court House in 1998. They will discuss the restoration fashions of the 1960's, the impact of those works on the building and why during the 1990's significant repairs included a limewash finish to the building were undertaken.

The Museum is a reflection of the Hawkesbury area's great historical significance to NSW. Over 4,000 items help illustrate its traumas and splendours under Governor Bligh,Macquarie and others. Archaeological evidence and interesting memorabilia in special displays on the Royal Australian Air Force and HMAS Hawkesbury are the best outside Canberra. Housed in the beautifully restored 1820's townhouse of John Howe allows insights into the chequered history as an Inn and newspaper publishing house.

This cemetery dates from 1810 set up by Governor Macquarie when he first arrived in the colony. Merchants, tradespeople and settlers alike are buried here and many are well known from our street names. Stories abound and many relate to the large number of settlers who came out in the First Fleet. Simple sandstone markers contrast with the elaborate marble and even metal makers giving an unusual insight into Nineteenth Century Hawkesbury.

New display on the history of the Toronto Hotel. This National Trust listed building has a long heritage in Lake Macquarie. Built in 1887 to service holiday makers, the pub has been a central focus of the area. This display shows how the hotel was the start of the development of Toronto from mission to farm to town, now the major township on the western shores of beautiful Lake Macquarie. The station is located below the hotel and has superb views over the lake.

An Art Deco Festival coinciding with Heritage Festival 1999 will celebrate the town's unique heritage. Leeton was designed in 1914 by Walter Burley Griffin as the administrative centre of the newly created Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. As a result, the town has a rich heritage of buildings of the period 1914 to the 1930's including many fine examples of the art deco style. Events include Art Deco Ball, Twilight Jazz concerts, Silent movies with organ player at the Roxy. Also Heritage walks and Open House at prominent buildings. The Festival will culminate with a formal launch of a new brochure on Leeton's Art Deco heritage and presentation of awards for heritage excellence to local businesses and individuals at a Heritage Dinner. Travel to Leeton is easy with regular bus, train and plane services. The town is well supplied with accommodation. Why not make the trip by train, perhaps staying at the Historic Hydro Hotel (c1919) with its views of Walter Burley Griffin's exotic water towers?

A walking tour of the Kosciuszko alpine area to inspect soil conservation works of the 1950's through to the 1970's following the impacts of grazing in the area. Tour includes discussion on alpine geology, geomorphology, soils and recent works by NPWS on broadscale rehabilitation of degrading alpine soils. The area also has strong associations with the Kiandra gold rush and skiing. Exploring a cave is exciting, exploring a cave by torchlight is exhilarating. The Castle Cave is a beautiful but unlit tourist cave at Yarrangobilly. Join a guided tour for a 2km walk down the Yarrangobilly gorge then into the Castle Cave to see how the early explorers would have first seen the caves in dim and eerie torchlight. The tour is a medium grade walk. Please bring good walking shoes, a jumper and raincoat (just in case), sunhat and sunscreen and a packed lunch.
