The Trust Classified the Avoca Beach Theatre in 2001 and following meetings with the theatre’s owners expressed grave concern at the proposed major redevelopment of this simple and well-loved coastal resort cinema.
While the Trust does not object to the development of additional screens in principle, the development proposed is excessive and unsympathetic and has not taken into account the concerns of the local community, the broader NSW public that know and treasure this theatre and its sensitive location in a park-like setting only 100 metres from the coastline.
In view of the broad community concern for the future of this cinema and its social significance and rare architectural character, the Trust is preparing a nomination for the listing of the theatre on the State Heritage Register.
