Ervin Gallery will once again host the much-anticipated Portia Geach Memorial Award Exhibition with the esteemed portrait prize of $18,000 for Australian women artists. Now in its 40th year, t he annual award has become synonymous with developing the profiles of women artists and attracts a high standard of entries from all around Australia , reflecting trends in contemporary art. Florence Kate Geach established the award in 1961, in memory of her sister Portia Stranston Geach (1873-1959), painter, etcher and political activist ‘for the best portraits painted from life of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters or the Sciences by any female artist resident in Australia.’. Jean Appleton first won the award in 1965, for her work, Self Portrait. In 2003, the Portia Geach Memorial Award went to Wendy Sharpe for Self Portrait with Tea Cup and Burning Paintings. This special anniversary year guarantees to be an interesting balance of tradition and experimentation with an exhibition of 60 selected portraits from the 315 entries received.
