Exhibiting Artists
With the proliferation of artists producing prints in Australia, it is timely to look at the important contribution of the Sydney Printmakers group, as they celebrate 45 years as a society.
Established as an artist-run project, Sydney Printmakers are a broad community of contemporary practicing artists that actively promote printmaking as a vital form of cultural expression. The current members of the group are involved in all aspects of contemporary printmaking - etching, lithography, relief prints, serigraphs and digital technology - and are active practitioners in the Sydney arts scene.
The Sydney Printmakers group was established in 1961 with a simple but ambitious objective. At a time when printmaking was slowly emerging from a long period of neglect in Sydney, a number of keen print enthusiasts joined to create an organisation dedicated to raising the profile of artists’ prints and printmaking within the art world and the wider community. The annual member’s exhibition became an important way of supporting the medium and was at the forefront of artistic developments in print practice.
As a forum for the promotion and exhibition of prints in Sydney over its unbroken history of 45 years, the Sydney Printmakers has advocated the vital place of printmaking within art and contemporary practice in particular, in the face of widespread indifference and ignorance.
The group aims to educate the public, demystify processes and dispel popular misconceptions about prints versus reproductions, and to encourage people to collect prints. Since 1961 over seventy exhibitions have been held in which the prints of more than 280 artists have been shown in Sydney, regional New South Wales and overseas, including most recently in China, Chile and Norway.
S.H. Ervin Gallery invited guest curator Anne Ryan - curator, Australian Prints, Art Gallery of New South Wales - to coordinate the exhibition, bringing together 90 works by 68 artists who have exhibited with the group.
The exhibition includes the work of artists who are current or former members of the Sydney Printmakers, or who have shown with them by invitation, over the past forty-five years. Many of the prints on display were shown in the Sydney Printmakers annual exhibitions, some the very same impression, while others are representative of the prints artists were making at the time of their involvement with the group. This comprehensive survey presents works by Earle Backen, John Coburn, Margaret Preston, Frank Hinder, Weaver Hawkins, Elizabeth Rooney, Brian Dunlop, Cressida Campbell, Michael Kempson, Ruth Burgess, Helen Mueller, Max Miller, Helen Edwards, Kate Briscoe, Salvatore Gerardi, Pia Larsen, Peter Laverty, Ursula Laverty, Bruce Latimer, Graham Kuo, Graham Marchant, Tom Gleghorn, Ruth Faerber and many more.
It is a journey through printmaking techniques and contemporary approaches including screen prints, linocuts, woodcuts, etching, lithography and digital imaging.
The Sydney Printmakers have made an enduring and significant contribution to the history of printmaking in Australia, and today continue this tradition as champions of the artist’s print.
Celebrate their creativity with us.
