Celebrating the creativity of the Sydney Printmakers group
an S.H. Ervin Gallery exhibition
19 August – 24 September 2006
With the proliferation of artists producing prints in Australia, it is timely to look at the extraordinary contribution from the Sydney Printmakers group, as they celebrate 45 years as a society. Established in 1961 and maintained as a volunteer artist-run project, The Sydney Printmakers are a professional group of exhibiting artists who have shown their work regularly both in Australia and overseas. Throughout their history, the group have actively promoted printmaking as a vital part of cultural expression. A journey of traditional print making techniques and contemporary approaches are examined with screen prints, linocuts, woodcuts, etching plates and lithographs all featured.

AKKY VAN OGTROP, CRESSIDA CAMPBELL & PIA LARSEN
a look at etching, woodblocks and an overview on collecting prints.
Akky van Ogtrop, graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Netherlands, majoring in printmaking. After moving to Australia, she became Manager of Stadia Graphics Gallery in Sydney and in 1988, she established Akky van Ogtrop Fine Arts, specialising in works on paper. In 1989 she organised the first art fair in Sydney, the Sydney Art on Paper Fair, and still manages this biennial event.
Cressida Campbell works in the woodblock medium, following in the illustrious footsteps of artists such as Margaret Preston and Thea Proctor. A fine draughtswoman and strong designer, her works show graphic elements reminiscent of Japanese prints. Cressida’s technique is painstaking: first resolving her designs then carving them in plywood, Campbell paints segments of the woodblock in layers of watercolour paint, making unique prints from each design.
Pia Larsen, is an emerging artist on the Sydney print scene and often works on large minimal etchings. Her exploration of gender themes presents a contemporary view to traditional printmaking themes.
