Witness to War -
an Australian War Memorial Travelling Exhibition
PUBLIC PROGRAM
SUNDAYS at 3pm on Observatory Hill
Throughout the 20th century and to the present day, artists commissioned by the Australian War Memorial have played an important role in documenting Australia’s involvement in war zones. The art produced is a direct legacy and document of these conflicts but also serves as a poignant reminder of the human dimension and consequences of war.

“a powerful album of strength, suffering and survival”, Richard Jinman, sydney magazine, August 2006
“I found our (our soldiers) were fantastic. I saw tons of little acts of kindness.
Of course, it was a peacekeeping operation, a humanitarian exercise. But they went above and beyond
what they needed to do to help these people who had gone through hell.”
Wendy Sharpe, official war artist East Timor, 1999, reflects on her experience, Sydney Morning Herald, 29 June 2006
“Much of this work has a great sense of immediacy and a haunting feeling.
..one is obliged to reflect on what happens when contemporary artists are otherwise faced with situations never encountered.”
John McDonald, Spectrum, Sydney Morning Herald, 22 July 2006
