State of the Heritage Report
The following checklist can be completed by local government authorities to ensure that their Council has submitted complete and up to date information for incorporation into the National Trust's 'State of the Heritage Report'.

Local Government Authority: Jerilderie Shire Council

Research and Investigation
1. Has a Heritage Study been undertaken and completed in your LGA?
 

The Jerilderie Main Street Heritage Study was undertaken in 1997.

A community based Heritage Assessment Study of the Shire of Jerilderie has commenced and it is anticipated that it will be completed by July 2002. A thematic history of the Shire (manuscript) was completed in 2000. This will be used to supplement the Heritage Study.

 
2. If so when was the Study completed? Has it been revised?
  The Jerilderie Main Street Heritage Study was completed in April 1997 and it will be revised during the completion of the community based Heritage Assessment Study.  
 

Tourism and Promotion
3. Does Council actively pursue cultural tourism in its area?
 

The Jerilderie Shire Council is very supportive of cultural tourism in its area. There is a local Historical Society (a committee of council) and a Heritage Museum - located in Council owned buildings. The Museum is run on a volunteer basis and is open regularly. The Shire supports the Museum and Society wherever possible with financial assistance - for building maintenance and in any appropriate promotional capacity.

There is a Tourism Committee and part of its activities is to promote the cultural heritage of the area.

The Shire employs a Heritage Advisor and promotes its cultural heritage through its Heritage Service.

The following publications are used to promote cultural tourism in the district. All are readily available throughout Jerilderie and in surrounding towns:

  • There is a Tourist Information Guide, which gives a brief history of Jerilderie, and a description of its heritage places.
  • 'Stop, Revive and Survive,' brochure for the Deniliquin, Jerilderie and Narrandera area.
  • A hospitality brochure for the Southern Riverina
  • A Jerilderie tourism brochure
  • A Horgan's Walk brochure prepared by Jerilderie Tidy Towns Committee
 
4. Has Council established specific heritage initiatives such as a
    'heritage trail', design guidelines & workshops?
  The council does not have a specific heritage trail however, Horgan's Walk - a designated trail with signage includes many of Jerilderie's cultural heritage sites.  
 

Support
5. Does Council operate or support the operation of a facility to allow
     recycling of fabric from demolished buildings?
  Not at this stage.  
6. Does Council operate or provide assistance to operate a
     local history research facility for local residents use?
  The Willows Heritage Museum has extensive facilities including - documents, letters, microfiche photographs and other archival material and this is available to the general public for local history research.  
7. Does Council operate or provide financial assistance, or in kind support,
     for the operation of a local history museum in its area?
  Yes, the Jerilderie Shire Council provides a variety of support for the operation of a local history museum in its area.  
8. Does Council operate a 'local heritage fund'? Please indicate
     level and type of assistance.

 

Yes the Jerilderie Shire Council does operate a local heritage fund. The budget is $10,000.00 per year and this is funded equally by the Jerilderie Shire Council and the Heritage Office.

The fund offers assistance to the owners of heritage places on a $ for $ basis and up to a maximum of $1,000.00

 
9. Does Council provide conservation incentives other than through
     its local heritage fund?
  No  
10. Does Council prepare and distribute information to its local community
       to assist residents in undertaking and conserving items of significance?
  The council has in its heritage files information and brochures on conservation issues and these have been provided by the NSW Heritage Office. The Heritage Advisor also prepares conservation reports as required.  
11. Does Council employ a Heritage Adviser? (please give details)
  Yes, the Council does employ a Heritage Advisor.

  There have not been any cases where this has arisen.
